Abstract

A new process for disposing of dried sewage sludge using a coke bed furnace is being developed in order to reduce coke consumption and utilize the combustion energy of the sludge effectively in its melting. Bench-scale experiments using a coke bed furnace consisting of a packed bed and a combustion region of dried sludge are being conducted to investigate the interaction between sludge combustion, sludge melting and coke consumption from swirl burners located in the combustion region. The feasibility, stabilization and utilization of this melting process is being examined and the decrement in coke consumption has been confirmed experimentally. Moreover, a 3-dimensional mathematical model has been developed to simulate the fluid flow, heat transfer and chemical reactions in the furnace.
