Abstract

Chemical, optical, and thermal characterization are carried out for seven hydrogen bond thermotropic liquid crystalline complexes formed between pentyloxy benzoic acid (5BAO) and p-n-alkyl benzoic acids (nBA, where n refers alkyl carbon chain length which varies from ethyl to octyl. FTIR, 1H, and 13C Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR) establishes the chemical investigations. Nematic and smectic F are the mesophases observed. Polarizing Optical Microscopic (POM) studies ensures the mesophases identified. Thermal investigation using Differential Scanning Calorimeter (DSC), provides the phase transition temperatures, enthalpy values, thermal stability factor, specific heat capacity values, and thermal equilibrium of the mesogenic complexes.
