Abstract

A tension-compression fatigue machine has been designed and built which permits fatigue testing under controlled uniaxial stress or strain amplitudes with zero, positive, or negative mean stress or strain. Stress control is available in three load ranges up to 1000 lb. Strain amplitudes can be measured and controlled by a differential transformer extensometer which covers up to 0.1-in. displacement in its 1.0-in. gauge length, in three ranges. The accuracy in the maximum range is ±100 μin. Larger displacements, up to 1.0 in., are controlled through ram instrumentation. Stress or strain amplitude, as well as frequency of cycling, can be varied continuously during the test in order to perform increasing stress or strain amplitude fatigue tests. Recording of the stress or strain level versus time or recording of the stress-strain hysteresis loop is accomplished by means of an oscilloscope or X-Y recorder.
