Abstract

Glasses of composition similar to blast-furnace slag and with variable magnesium content, were activated with saturated lime solution for 28 days. Among the hydration products solid solutions whose end members are C 4A.aq and M 4A.aq, were recognized. The presence of such solid solutions might explain the volume stability of Portland blast furnace cement made up with slags having very high MgO content, in contrast to the Portland cement unsoundness, due to the formation of Mg(OH) 2.
