Abstract

The conditions of occurence of hybrid surface modes in a periodic stratified dielectric structure in contact with a positive birefringent uniaxial material are studied by using the 4 X 4 transfer matrix formalism. The dispersion relation and the total power flow of hybrid surface modes are exactly calculated. The band structures for the allowed values of the propagation constant and of the anisotropic medium optical axis orientation are illustrated numerically. The upper cutoff thickness for various hybrid surface modes in the antiguide array structure in contact with a positive uniaxial medium are obtained.
