Abstract

Summary Cabbage (Brassica oleraceaL. var capitataL.), an important vegetable crop belonging to the family Cruciferae, is grown in many countries espeically in Europe, North America, and Asia. As per botanical characteristics, it can be classified as common cabbage, heading cabbage, and savoy. It is a cross pollinated crop showing strong heterosis in F1 hybrid progeny. Due to high yield, strong disease resistance, wide adaptability, good quality and uniform economic characteristics, hybrid cabbage have been widely used in many countries. The present review deals with vegetative and reproductive biology of the crop and the recent approaches for hybrid seed production in cabbage.
