Abstract

In a recent article (Philosophy and Phenomenological Research, September, i98i),' Peter Hutcheson offers several objections to my views on the relationship between private language and the phenomenological reductions of Edmund Husserl.' Before responding to each of Hutcheson's major points, I would like to set out some of the background against which his objections should be understood. Early in Cartesian Meditations Husserl makes the following claim relative to the carrying out of his phenomenological reduction:
