Abstract

Ticks are hematophagous parasites with worldwide distribution, and feed off every class of vertebrates, including humans. Through their bites, infected ticks can transmit a variety of pathogens (viruses, bacteria and parasites) that can cause serious diseases in both humans and animals. Besides being responsible for major losses in livestock production in many parts of the world, tick-borne diseases (TBDs) are currently being recognized as a serious and growing public health problem in Europe.
