Abstract

This chapter introduces the Human Resource Management (HRM) practices in Taiwan by nine sections, which are the background and development of HRM, the development stages of HRM, the strategic role of HRM, the key factors determining HRM practices, a review of Human Resource (HR) practices, key changes in the HR function, key challenges facing HRM, what is likely to happen to HR functions in the next five years, and a case study of HTC, a worldwide known smartphone and tablet company in Taiwan. Without plentiful natural resources, one of the factors that contributed to the success of Taiwan is commonly considered to be the development of human resources. Several Taiwan-based empirical studies have supported the assertion that Strategic Human-Resource Management (SHRM) can enhance firm performance. Another critical requirement of SHRM is the full involvement of line departments in HRM functions and activities. SHRM emphasizes close coordination between such internal HRM functions as recruiting, selection, training, development, performance appraisal, and compensation.
