Abstract

To become more human through the humanities, the sciences, the arts-whatever the discipline, process or vehicle-has, I suspect, been a goal of some men as long as man has been in existence. As men sought to bring meaning to their existence, as they struggled to make sense out of both their universe and themselves in that universe, and with that sense somehow to improve their lot, they unavoidably were confronted with the use of their own powers to accomplish it. These powers inevitably were connected to their human qualities: their intelligence, their knowledge, their sensibility, their creativity and their capacity to relate in wondrously complex ways with one another. We continue the search for ways to bring our humanness to fuller realization. Emerging in our time are approaches to human growth and learning, such as confluent education, which can help resolve some of the conflicts and what might, at first glance, appear to be contradictions between the values of one group and those of another.
