Abstract

Current evidence shows multiple and complementary roles of human beta defensins. It is clear that these structurally and functionally similar molecules are key parts of human immune system. In human, beta defensins are found mainly at epithelial surfaces, for example in the skin, lung and gut.In addition to antimicrobial ability, the function of beta defensins in immunomodulation, both as pro-inflammatory and anti-inflammatory mediators, has been widely studied. The induction of inflammatory cytokines was significantly suppressed by the presence of beta defensins at low concentration. However,at high concentration, beta defensins show pro-inflammatory effect.Structural investigations of beta defensins provide molecular basis for a better understanding of their properties in different processes (such as fertility, development, wound healing and cancer)and their potential as therapeutic agents. Key words: β3 defensin; Antimicrobial peptide ; Chemotaxis
