Abstract

Using HREM we have determined the relationship of microstructure to synthesis conditions and magnetic properties of Pt/Co multilayers, a candidate for a magneto-optical storage medium. Sputtering with Ne (or Ar) resulted in smoother Pt and Co layers than by vapor deposition, which is a less energetic process. However, sputtered multilayers had their (111)-fcc atomic planes more misaligned relative to the substrate surface than vapor-deposited multilayers, which consequently have superior magnetic properties. The (111)-fcc texture and magnetic anisotropy of sputtered Pt/Co multilayers was improved by growing them on a ZnO underlayer, which had its c-axis normal to the substrate.
