Abstract

How to Survive your Viva is the first publication that focuses exclusively on the viva element of doctoral study and examinations. In so doing, it usefully supplements the books already available (including a companion volume by the same author; How to Write a Thesis [Open University Press, 2002]) that guide postgraduate students on undertaking and writing-up a research project. The book’s publication reflects growing attention to ensuring the quality of advanced academic study. It should complement materials that individual higher education institutions are increasingly providing for their doctoral students.
