Abstract

Categorizing even alternant hydrocarbons as joint or disjoint serves as the basis for differentiating between antiaromatic, Y-antiaromatic and very Y-antiaromatic structures. Both previously proposed methods for categorizing even alternant hydrocarbons as joint or disjoint are unreliable. A new approach is presented and shown to be both conveniently applicable and reliable. Because this topic bridges Huckel theory and modern structural concerns, it is suitable for inclusion in undergraduate Huckel theory courses.
