Abstract

In this era of rapid Internet development, Internet buzzwords have gradually penetrated into all aspects of people's lives. However, it is not clear how the process, mechanism, and micro-level application of Internet buzzwords work and their impact on people's language habits and thinking patterns. In order to explore the process and mechanism of the spread of Internet buzzwords, this paper selected the Chinese online buzzword "YYDS" (eternal God in English, Yong Yuan De Shen in Chinese) and examined its usage on the Weibo through content analysis. Then, the data obtained were analyzed and discussed. The results show that the application of the term in the Chinese context has a clear bias in terms of subjects, topics and emotional expressions, and its dissemination process can be divided into six stages: germination, precipitation, warm-up, explosion, stabilization and decline, while opinion leaders and mainstream media play important and different roles in its life cycle. This exploration provides scientific and practical reference materials for subsequent analysis and research on online language.
