Abstract

This paper answers the question of how a successful and effective airport safety awareness programme can be established. Based on open International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) requirements, Zurich Airport has conducted detailed stakeholder interviews and established a balanced approach including different types of awareness products. The awareness programme is based on the following pillars: a basic theoretical model describing how safety-conscious attitudes can be turned into sustainable safe behaviour; a broad evaluation of user requirements; and a concept defining topics, target audience, products as well as timing of safety awareness activities. The paper lists some practical examples used at Zurich Airport and proposes indicators to evaluate the effectiveness of safety awareness campaigns. The paper is based on the Zurich Airport safety awareness concept established in November 2008.
