Abstract

Nosebleeds or epistaxes will happen to 60% of the normal population at sometime in their life (Doyle, 1986). It has been noted that there is an increased incidence in pregnancy although the actual increase has not been quantified. The actual mechanism of increased risk is thought to be related to the rise in oestrogen which produces nasal congestion from its effects on the parasympathetic nervous system and also the increase in systemic blood pressure seen in pregnancy.
