Abstract

All businesses face rules and regulations that govern, restrict, and seek to control how they operate. Many of these regulations in the United States are federal laws, created by the government and backed up with enforcement. These laws governing corporations could be either criminal, (those prosecuted by the state) or civil (those laws dealing with contract breaches or tort cases). States, cities, and municipalities create the same type of laws locally. For businesses that choose to be publicly traded, another group of laws that regulate the sale of securities and interstate commerce apply. In any event, these myriad of laws and regulations can be quite daunting for any business. This paper will examine the pharmaceutical industry as a driver of commerce, and the impact regulations have on its operations; and will explore how other organizations combat the same or similar rules.
