Abstract

In today’s universities, more and more college students frequently use social media, and what impact will this use have on them? How should schools face this situation? In order to answer these questions, this study selects the common use scenarios in college students’ daily life, such as fear of missing out and the impact on their self-esteem, and the use of social media is likely to have a negative impact on college students to a certain extent. This study aims to fill these gaps in the field of literature. In this study, 483 college students filled in the research scale. The results show that fear of missing out will increase college students’ different social media self-presentation, in which positive self-presentation will further produce online social anxiety and have a negative impact on self-esteem. My research shows that the positive self-presentation of social media caused by college students’ fear of missing out will make college students have a fragile self-esteem. Therefore, in modern university education, college students should be encouraged to display honest self-presentation and adopt the combination of positive self-presentation and honest self-presentation to make them have a strong self-esteem.
