Abstract

This article is meant both as a guide for people who want to start genealogical research on their Exclusion Era Chinese American relatives, and as a personal narrative detailing some of the challenges I have encountered over the past few years as I tried to piece together the lives of my great-grandfather and his immediate family. While the article is written with Chinese American genealogists in mind, it is my hope that it will encourage others to study the lives of individual Chinese American immigrants during the exclusion period and to then make their research available to the public. Added biographical studies will give us a fuller, more rounded understanding of this historical moment, stripping back the layers of anonymity surrounding the individuals who made up this first wave of Chinese immigrants.
