Abstract

I created my secret language in childhood following conflicting longings to both record and conceal my inner thoughts. Originally, each word had its own symbol. When reading became complex, I chose my favorite images as a substitution code for the alphabet, eventually streamlining this further with abbreviations, a concept discovered when a blind friend taught me to read Braille. My language grew up with me, allowing me to write love poems on the bus and functioning as a murmuring voice in some of my paintings. In the picture of my dog Cindy, this language tells the story of how my love for her led me to become a painter. Recently I have attempted to have my botanically inspired paintings function as parts of yet another language, each image a puzzle piece in a map of psychic transformation.
