Lego® Play: Implementing a Culture of Creativity & Making in the Academic Library
  • Jan 1, 2015
  • Megan Lotts

Introduction As libraries continue to grow and change in the 21st century, we are seeing an increased emphasis on outreach, engagement, creativity, and innovation for academic libraries. The author believes these ideas are crucial to the future of academic libraries and that making spaces can be fun, affordable and a new way to connect to communities and engage with patrons.1 Creating innovative projects and engaging making events can help stimulate broader conversations among patrons and library employees about the value of academic libraries. These conversations can also be a way for library liaison’s to connect to their faculty, students, and staff. The Art Library Lego Playing Station was created to stimulate creativity and innovation within the Rutgers University Libraries. This paper will look at the ideas of innovation, engagement, and making in the academic library as a means to connect with departments on campus to further educate students, faculty, and staff, about the benefits of using the Library. In this paper the author will discuss the planning and implementation of the Lego® making station, including visual documentation and comments by makers and users of the Art Library Lego Playing Station. This paper will discuss working with the press, as well as developing partnerships to help implement the impact of this project. The author will show the value the Art Library Lego Playing Station, Legos, and hands on active learning activities have brought to a Big 10 academic research library. Making in the Academic Libraries Although we see Makerspaces and making activities in many public libraries, such as the Chicago Public Library Maker Lab, which won a social innovative award in 2013, the act of making and makerspaces is a concept that is starting to get more attention in academic libraries. Erin Fisher believes that “Makerspaces emerged around 2005 as an off shoot of the Do-it Yourself (DIY) movement”.2 Although I agree that the DIY movement has been a catalyst to Makerspaces, I believe it’s important to note that when it comes to the history of making we see making centric spaces happening in New York as early as 1873. The Gowanda Ladies Social Society who formed as a sewing, knitting, book discussing, and social circle later became the Ladies Library Association and received a state library charter as the Gowanda Free Library in 1900.3 This may one of the first times we see making occurring in a library. In the context of this paper the author defines making as, “to bring into existence by shaping or changing material, combining parts.”4 Although it is unlikely that the Gowanda Free Library had a 3D printer, it is important to note that this library began over the act of making, and in this case a sewing and knitting circle. First let’s define a Makerspace. When searching the Merrian-Webster dictionary online the author was unable to find a definition for a Makerspace. When visiting Wikipedia the author did not find a definition but was re-directed to the term Hackerspace, which was defined as a community space where people with

Submission Leveraging on the campus blog platform to extend our reach to students and faculty at Nanyang Technological University Library NURHAZMAN ABDUL AZIZ Library, Nanyang Technological University Nanyang Avenue, Singapore 639798 nurhazman@ntu.edu.sg CHIA YEW BOON Library, Nanyang Technological University Nanyang Avenue, Singapore 639798 ybchia@ntu.edu.sg HAZEL LOH Library, Nanyang Technological University Nanyang Avenue, Singapore 639798 ktvoo@ntu.edu.sg Purpose of this paper: The purpose of this paper is to present and share an exploratory learning journey in the adoption of social media in an academic institution. The Library and the Centre for IT Services (CITS) at Nanyang Technological University, Singapore developed and implemented a campus wide blog platform to support learning, research and outreach. The Library led the collaboration which was funded by the University’s Cool Campus initiative in 2009. The Library had initiated the use of the blog platform for library outreach in 2006 and this has resulted in the opportunity to expand the platform beyond the Library to become a university wide implementation in support of learning, research or outreach activities in a social and informal way. Design/methodology/approach: The Library initially began a project to explore the feasibility of using a single blog platform on WordPress in 2006. It was a local installation with minimum server specifications and IT support to help maintain the server. As it was the first open source installation for our IT department, there was a high learning curve to support the server and application and also for our librarians to pick up the necessary skills to create and maintain blogs. We began our journey gradually with an internal library staff blog followed by a subject library blog for the Humanities and Social Sciences Library. Since then, the number of library blogs has grown steadily to 7 blogs. In 2009, with the adoption of the blog platform as a campus wide initiative under the Cool Campus project, the technical development and support of the platform was outsourced to a vendor for system scalability and long term support. With the launch of the campus blog platform in 2010, the Library actively initiated a project to develop 42 subject guides by our subject librarians to support the information needs of their users. The NTU blog team comprising librarians and IT staff also developed and worked on a plan to publicise, develop and train users in utilising the campus wide blog platform to serve their purpose and thus achieve the vision of a vibrant campus wide social network. Learning Outcomes: With a team to lead and support the campus wide social media platform, a number of learning outcomes can be listed from the planning, implementation, development, collaboration and dissemination stages. In short, this has been a new and exciting learning experience for librarians to champion a campus wide social media project. With this blog initiative, the growth in our online patrons’ visitorship to the digital library has been evident, thus placing the library as one of the highest accessed online services in the university. The library is also able to share its practical experience, learning points and useful tips for the implementation of a social web initiative with other libraries. What is original/value of paper: The paper shares the journey and experiences of the NTU Library from a non-technical perspective for the benefit of librarians and practising professionals who are developing or embarking on their social media initiatives. This is an original study on the expanded role of the Library in building a social media platform in an academic institution. Future research and studies could be done to compare various social media efforts implemented elsewhere, particularly in the Asia Pacific region.

Osmanlı Türkçesiyle yazılan Mecma-i fenn-i zerâfet , Salâhî’nin Farsça gramer konusunda kaleme aldığı telif eserlerinden biridir. Eser, erken dönemlerde sözlüklerde açıklanan gramer konularının düzenlenerek bir kitapta toplanması ve Arapça yazılan Farsça gramerlerin de anlaşılmasındaki zorluğun giderilmesi amacıyla Osmanlı Türkçesiyle yazılmıştır. Mecma-i fenn-i zerâfet adlı eserde müellifin istifade ettiğini söylediği kaynaklar, kütüphanelerdeki kataloglarda farklı adlarla kaydedilmiş ve eserlerle ilgili bilgiler eksik verilmiştir. Bu makalede, Farsçanın tarihi seyri konusunda kısa bir bilgiden sonra hem Salâhî’nin Mecma-i fenn-i zerâfet adlı eser hem de istifade ettiğini söylediği Kavâid-i Fürs ile Mefâtîh-i deriyye adlı eserlerle ilgili bilgiler verilmiş ve Mecma-i fenn-i zerâfet adlı eser tanıtılmıştır.

BOOK COLLECTIONS IN CORPORE IN LITHUANIAN LIBRARIES
  • Jan 1, 2013
  • Alma Braziūnienė

A book collection in corpore is usually used to describe a historically formed, indivisible collection of books having a historic, scientific and cultural value. Specialized research on this topic in Lithuania has been scanty, if any, with the exception of research conducted on acquiring and storing book collections in libraries as well as similar topics. The article aims at investigating the theoretical aspects of using the term book collection and providing the analysis of existing practices and trends with regard to book collections both in Lithuanian and foreign libraries. To achieve this objective, the following methods of literary analysis and empirical research have been used: analysis of library websites, expert survey, interviews with the library staff taking care of book collections at their disposal. The objects of research are the book collections in corpore, acquired and stored in the National Library of Lithuania, libraries of state-level and county libraries. The libraries which decide to store and preserve book collections in corpore, undertake a museum function, that is, the inherent function pertinent to a memory institution. This function is not characteristic of public libraries. However, it is among the core functions of the libraries having the national and state status. Based on the criterion of the former owner, collections in corpore can be grouped as follows: personal libraries (the libraries of outstanding statesmen, public figures, science and culture makers) and book heritage of various institutions (institutional libraries). It turned out that currently 144 collections in corpore are being stored in the National Library of Lithuania, state-level and county libraries, with personal libraries identified as the prevailing group among them (137). The seven remaining collections in corpore are institutional libraries. The analysis of the information available in library websites on the collections in corpore revealed that the material presented is rather scarce and the websites do not contain comprehensive information about the scope of the respective collections. Thus, the user’s access to information is rather restricted. Today, the acquisition of collections in corpore has been reduced in scope, reflecting the current situation in librarianship. The status of some of the libraries which have acquired a great many book collections in corpore (for example, Vilnius University Library) have to be reviewed. Having established whether we are dealing with a collection in corpore or whether it is merely a donated collection of books, we can integrate the books in question into the library holdings, marking book provenance indicators in a bibliographic description in the online catalogue. Due to their exclusivity, book collections in corpore are becoming book monuments. Such a status puts their custodians under an obligation to treat them as the sets of documents having special value, that is, as book monuments.

Purposes of Study: Information needs and information seeking pattern of rural public library users are varied on account of their different requirements which might be due to the various demographic, social, cultural and economic factors. Identifying information needs is the first step towards satisfying the needs of library users. An information seeking process involves a number of further steps, including: identifying information sources, consulting the sources and accessing information. Information needs and information seeking behavior is a kind of communication behavior, which surely be influenced by many factors. Objectives and Samples of the Study: This study has been carried out on public library users in order to know the basic information needs and status of information seeking pattern of public library users of Barak Valley, South Assam which comprises of varieties of public library users viz. students, teachers, farmers, business class people, women and elderly people, etc. The respondents of the present study are mainly drawn from the rural areas of three districts of Barak Valley where the majority of the people are comparatively having lower level of educational background and they are generally less educated. Methodology and Research Design: For that purpose, survey method has been adopted by the investigators using mainly schedule which is supplemented by observation and interviews in some cases. The self-designed schedule comprising of 22 questions has been distributed amongst the randomly selected samples. The schedules were distributed amongst the 300 samples, out of which 215 respondents have responded. During data analysis, it has been found that only 139 users are valid respondents and participated mainly in the survey. So the major part of study reveals result of 139 respondents. The filled up schedules were collected from the respondents for data analysis and interpretations. On the basis of filled up schedule the data has been analysed and tabulated using MS-Excel Software. For data analysis percentage technique has been adopted. Important Findings and Discussion: The survey finding reveals that majority of the respondents (47.0%) belongs to the age group of 16-25 years. The study shows that the awareness about the rural/public library was more among the respondents and the highest numbers (34.53%) of the respondents visit public library once a week. It also highlights that most of the respondents (40.29%) prefer to spend at least one hour in the rural public library. The study also reveals the fact that the maximum demand for information from the respondents (88.44%) were from employment related information. The Television channels (100.0%) and Newspapers (98.56%) are two important sources from where the majority of public library users (67.44%) get their desired information needs. Majority of the respondents (86.33%) say that the information given by various sources are moderate. The study reveals that the majority of the respondents (82.73%) are very much satisfied with the information which are provided by the rural/public libraries available in their locality; and a substantial number of respondents (64.74%) do not face any difficulties to access right information whereas very few respondents (32.25%) are getting problems to access right information. Conclusion, Suggestions and Recommendations: The present study has clearly indicated that, regarding the improvement of information services in rural environment it is necessary to make rural public library in every rural villages and make the rural people aware about the need and importance of the rural public library. Now a day’s libraries play an important role in teaching-learning, making people informed citizens and make people aware about the various developmental schemes being run by the States and Central Governments. The library gives more information to rural community and help in development of rural areas. So, the Assam Government should take steps for the proper growth and development of Rural Public Libraries located in under developed areas of Barak Valley, South Assam in particular and rest of Assam in general for the overall development of the state. It would not be out of place to mention that, Library Legislation has not been enacted in Assam. Therefore an effort should be taken from the Govt. of Assam for the overall development of public libraries in Assam state especially in underdeveloped areas for creating more jobs and extending more library services to the society. Reliability and Validity: This was the first attempt to study the status of rural public libraries and to assess the information needs and information seeking patterns of the respondents. The validity and reliability of data depend on the responses received from the respondents. As far as the present study is concerned, it is original and carried out on the basis of random sampling method for determining the sample and before going for actual study, pilot study was conducted to see the validity and reliability of tools employed for data collection.

This paper examine the relevance of donations to Special Federal Tertiary Institution Libraries in Zaria, Kaduna State, the objectives of the study are: to find out the donor agencies available to the libraries; the donations given to the libraries and to find out how relevant are the donation from the donors. The study adopted qualitative research approach. While structured and open-ended interview and relevant documents, including gift and donation files, acquisition records and library accession registers were used to collect data for the study. The population of the study consisted of the Special Federal Tertiary Institution Libraries under study while the subjects of the study were the 41 staff, which included the institutions’ librarians (Liaison Officers) and the resources development unit library staff of each library. Descriptive statistical tools were used to analyze and present the data. The study discovered that the most donated resources to the libraries were books and journals; the findings also revealed that, though all the special federal tertiary institution libraries have one type of donor or the other, they mostly benefit from individual and corporate donors and also most of these resources were current but irrelevant, while those that were relevant were not sufficient to meet the needs of the libraries. In the light of the findings of the study, it was concluded that the special federal tertiary institution libraries studied were inadequately funded, thus, the libraries have sought for an alternative means in terms of donation to support or augment the major source of fund for library resource development, which has contributed positively but not sufficiently to the development of the library. The study recommended among others that, there is need for the government to increase library annual allocation to avoid problem of inadequate funds. And there is a need for those libraries under study to seek for support from local donors such as Nigerian Book Foundation (NBF), Sir Emeka Offor Foundation (SEOF) that could contribute financially or other wise to their library; Donors should try to donate relevant resources to libraries this can be done by seeking advice from a professional librarian.

Even though in the 21st centuries, the advanced information technology and the internet have been available with each passing day, there still has been existing the digital divide around the world. Despites the most public libraries maintaining public access computing service, but still the rural libraries are fragile; that is, these rural and small town libraries are the most disadvantages with respect to being able to sustain the public access computing. It seems that quite often the isolated, rural libraries still have to face and struggle with the continued challenges: the lack of funding and resources. The study includes the three rural libraries in Taichung County. And then in order to proclaim the digital divide on these rural libraries and their patrons, it also subsumes the Taichung City Cultural Affairs Bureau as a comparison. The study employed questionnaire survey and interview methods. Heping, Shinshou, Tungshih libraries of Taichung County and Taichung City Cultural Affairs Bureau administrative areas were included. The researcher administrated two kinds of survey questionnaires: one for the librarians and the other for library patrons. Survey questionnaires were administrated from September to December, 2008. A total of 4 copies of librarians’and 381 copies of library patrons’ questionnaires were distributed. The return rate of librarians’ questionnaire was 100%. 348 copies of library patrons’ questionnaire were returned valid, with a net return rate 91.3%. Service Solutions (SPSS) using descriptive statistics, Chi-square, Goodman & Kruskal’s Gamma and factorial analysis of variance. Moreover, the study had interviewed the 4 librarians and 24 patrons to understand the library computer use and their opinions about the public access computing service. The conclusions of this study are as following: 1. The service of public access computing in the rural, small town libraries is facing the digital divide.; 2. The patrons in the rural, small town libraries are facing the digital divide.; 3. The utilizing of library computers are disproportionately low.; 4. The librarians and the patrons in the rural, small town libraries are critical at risk with the lack of computer skills and Internet access trainin.g; 5.Public access computing services in the rural, small town libraries can’t meet the need of disadvantaged groups.; 6. The rural, small town libraries can’t be of great assistance in bridging the digital divide. This study puts forward suggestions to combine the governmental departments, the rural and small town libraries, Digital divide Centers, and the volunteers to sustain the computer skills and internet access training of the disadvantaged groups. Finally, the study also put further suggestions to expand the study about the impact of digital divide on the public access computing service and the disadvantaged patrons, then as a result to improve the public access computing service in the rural and small town libraries.
