Abstract

Differences in health across ethnic groups have been reported internationally for a range of health outcomes. The relationship between ethnicity and health is multifaceted, with evidence suggesting much of this variation is associated with socioeconomic position. Conventional indicators and measurements of ethnicity have statistically explained health differences between BAME and white populations. However, they do not tell the full story and must be interpreted with caution. The chapter explores further: The term ‘BAME’ and the existing data limitations when investigating ethnic disparities in health. An overview of prevalent health conditions and barriers to accessing services for BAME communities. Illustrative examples of possible public health interventions to improve the health and healthcare experiences of BAME patient populations.
