Abstract

The role of advanced practice providers (APPs) in emergency medicine is evolving over time, with increased patient visits seen by physician assistants and nurse practitioners, as well as higher acuity patients. Little data exists regarding the impact of APPs on productivity, flow, and safety in the emergency department setting. We discuss a study by Pines et al in the December issue of Academic Emergency medicine, in which they evaluate the effect of APPs on productivity, safety, and flow of patients in a large, multicenter emergency medicine group. We provide critical evaluation and commentary, and highlight social media discussion.
