Abstract

Electron heating by an electric field in basic semiconductors has been under study for several decades. Lasers are used for diagnostics of nonequilibrium distribution of field-heated electrons and, more recently, to heat an electron gas. The author discusses the heating of electrons by an electric field, its associated effects and its application to laser heating. He provides a description of the methods of optical heating and relaxation of hot electrons in a semiconductor.
