Abstract

Cover illustration. The cover image shows a Australian Green-striped burrowing frog, Cyclorana albogutatta, emerging from its burrow after aestivation. In this issue of the Journal of Morphology, Young et al. study the effect of temperature on the extent of muscle disuse atrophy in the gastrocnemius and iliofibularis muscles during aestivation in the burrowing frog C. alboguttata. (pp. 165-174). They show that despite being inactive and immobile for many months during aestivation this frogs protects it skeletal muscles from extensive disuse atrophy even at elevated temperatures.
