Abstract

5W n THEN I was asked to present a paper on this subject I did not realize what a peculiarly difficult task had been allotted me. Perhaps you wonder why I make this statement, for it may seem a simple matter to present this subject, but I feel sure you will all agree with me that there are many angles and that, in approaching each one, I must be fair to both sides, with a frank, unbiased, and open mind. First of all, I feel that to have a perfect understanding and happy relationship between the hospital and the private duty nurse, each must be able to understand the problems of the other, and in order to gain contentment for the patient, who is after all the center, there must be perfect cooperation of those who have his welfare in hand. In order to cover this subject briefly, I feel it best to divide it into two parts: the first that of the hospital, the second that of the nurse. From the hospital angle I shall start with the office of the superintendent of nurses and divide this into component parts for closer consideration.
