Abstract
Two purposes are served in the presentation of our professional society awards, such as the AGU Hydrology Section Horton Award. First, we identify and recognize the best work of our colleagues.Second, we remind ourselves that this good work is being done by good people; people we are proud to know as more than ‘our colleague,’ but first, to know as ‘our friend.’ Our Horton awardee is George Hornberger of the Environmental Sciences Department at the University of Virginia. I have been entrusted to say a few words. about George's contributions, as he is both our colleague and our friend.
