Abstract

Gary Nabel and colleagues at the National Institute of Health, Bethesda have developed a vaccine that protects macaques from infection with the deadly Ebola virus 1. Sullivan N.J et al. Development of a preventative vaccine for Ebola virus infection in primates. Nature. 2000; 408: 605-609 Crossref PubMed Scopus (584) Google Scholar . Infection with this virus causes internal and external bleeding and fever, often killing its victims in a few days. Ebola virus emerged in the African rainforest in 1976 and has caused several outbreaks, the latest killing >150 people in Uganda. The highest mortality is associated with the 1976 Mayinga strain of Ebola Zaire, one of four known Ebola strains.
