Abstract
SUMMARYThe classic cytological term «homöotypisch» («Theilungsform») by FLEMMING (1887), is rightly translated into the English «homoeotypic», which is preferable to the alternative and acceptable form «homeotypic». Both prefixes «homoeo-» and «homeo-» derive from the Greek öμoιoς = «similar», «like». By contrast, the common tendency to accept the expression «homotypic division», should be avoided as a misnomer, because the prefix «homo» derives from the Greek ὁμóς= «the same».
