Abstract

Over the last years, the microbial xylanases have been studied extensively due mainly to the various possibilities for industrial applications. Their potential in bioconversion of lignocellulosic biomass to fuels, feeds and chemicals was the principle interest for a number of years (Wong et al., 1988). More recently, the possible use of these enzyme systems as bleaching agent in the pulp and paper industry has gained a considerable attention (Paice et al., 1988). Replacing the presently used chemical bleaching sequences in paper manufacture totally or in part by enzyme treatments of the pulps would have a tremendous impact on the environmental pollution problems created by the discharge of waste. The concern caused recently by the detection of dioxin and furans in consumer goods such as milk cartons and baby diapers which has been attributed directly to the use of activated chlorine in the bleaching process.
