Abstract

Rare earth manganites RMnO3 ±δ have attracted much attention of researchers. This interest is driven by attempts to understand the nature of the magne toresistance in perovskitelike manganites and the fer roelectromagnetic properties of hexagonal mangan ites. From the viewpoint of physicochemical analysis, perovskite manganites are currently best understood. In particular, extended homogeneity regions with respect to the metal components have been found for them. For hexagonal manganites (space group Р63cm), similar studies have been performed only for scandium manganite, in which scandium and manga nese oxides were found to be slightly soluble. The question arises as to how the replacement of scandium by another rare earth metal will change the homoge neity regions of hexagonal manganites. In this work, we determined lowand highmetal boundaries of the homogeneity region of ytterbium manganite in air in the temperature range 900- 1400°C. The results are presented as a fragment of the phase diagram of the Yb-Mn-O system in air (figure).
