Abstract
This article gives a review of the central issues and a guide to the literature in the current and expanding locus of birthing controversy. Consideration is given to parameters of the problem, including mortality rates, value of medical intervention, maternal‐infant bonding, and the related concern of the legal implications. Current positions of health care providers are outlined. Possible effects of this issue on nursing, the patient, and society are explored.
