Abstract

A radically different approach to experimental work has been adopted in a first-year biology course at Macquarie University. Since 1967 students have done about one-third of their practical work at home. This paper indicates how the home experiment approach is now implemented with about 200 students of widely differing backgrounds. The essential features of this approach are identified and attention is drawn to the fact that home experiments, properly managed, can overcome many of the shortcomings of conventional first-year biology courses.
