Abstract
This chapter explores the role of home education in enhancing independent living skills and self-determination for children with developmental disabilities in Japan. A literature review of the National Institute of Informatics database (CiNii) articles found that home education significantly contributed to skill acquisition, with parental involvement improving daily living skills, communication, and learning abilities. Parent training programs were effective in supporting children. Challenges include the need for increased paternal involvement and more comprehensive research. The study highlights the need for collaboration between families, schools, and community resources. The findings suggest that further research in home education strategies can enhance independent living skills and self-determination among this demographic. The chapter discusses successful practices, parent support groups, and lifelong tailored support. It addresses study limitations and proposes future research to strengthen evidence for the effectiveness of home education.
