Abstract
Based on the ekphrasis of Goya’s The Witches’ Sabbath (1797–1798), which occupies the central pages of Tiempo de silencio, this chapter explores how Luis Martin-Santos’ creative work can be read as a questioning of the harms of patriarchy not just for women but for men as well, at a time and place where it was not even conceived as a ruling system of life. Based on the theories of Gerda Lerner in The Creation of Patriarchy this chapter explores how the myth of Orestes and its constitutional base of Western Civilization is present in Tiempo de silencio, and how Tiempo de destruccion presents destruction as a need for new creation. It also reflects on the importance of myth in expanding and consolidating a social system.
