Abstract

It is well known that in ancient Rome there was a complex magical ceremony, which involved the mythical figure of Tacita, a young naiad unable to bridle his tongue and so punished by Jupiter to be mute. The function of this ritual, celebrated during the Feralia festivals, was to reiterate the importance of silence and self-control in ancient idea of woman.
