Abstract
This article examines metaphorical verbs for describing the scoring and preventing of goals in the languages of handball, ice hockey and football, such as hämmern, donnern, verwandeln or entschärfen. The focus here is on the changes in the valency structure compared to the general language verbs as well as the relationship to the valency of prototypical base verbs such as werfen and schießen. Expansions and reductions of valency can be observed, as well as changes in argument types. The syntactic-semantic characteristics of metaphorical verbs are described as a result of terminologisation in the professional language of sport.
