Abstract
Helium induced X-ray emission (HIXE) has been used to measure the L subshell ionization cross sections of Dy, W, Au, Pb and U for thin and thick targets in the energy range 1⩽ E⩽3.0 MeV. The experiment is compared with the predictions of the plane wave Born approximation, PWBA, the relativistic PWBA (PWBAR) and the Coulomb deflection corrected, perturbed stationary states relativistic PWBA (CPSSR) of Brandt and Lapicki. The CPSSR theory best describes the results over the energy and atomic number range studied.
