Abstract

It's a matter of equal rights, a friend once told me. He continued by saying, Do you want to be a second-class citizen? Think about it: You're lying on a hospital bed and your lover can't even come see you because he's not considered family. Of the approximate 1,049 federal benefits at stake in the battle over same-sex marriage, the lack of hospital visitation rights is perhaps one of the most popularly cited and emotionally appealing examples of legally sanctioned inequities that exist between same-sex couples denied legal status and opposite-sex unions recognized under United States federal law.
