Abstract

The name-based surnames of the Jews in Piotrków are structurally different. Their derivative basis consists mainly of Old Testament names in different (linguistic) forms, but also in Yiddish form. Among the most common were Jacob, Moses and Izaak. The anthroponyms of the Jews in the territory of Piotrków were formed with suffixes of different origin, mainly of Slavic and German descent. Jewish name-based surnames represent the cognitive categories of person and kinship. The prototype model of surnames derived from male names is: biblical first name + suffix -owicz/-ewicz and derived from female names is: yiddish first name + suffix -ski.
