Abstract
The history of major milestones in bacteriophage research over the past century includes the events from the discovery of bacteriophage in 1917 to contemporary work on phage ecology and evolution. Nearly every major field of biology has been touched by phage biology, genetics, biochemistry, ecology, and biotechnology. In medicine, both diagnostic work with phage typing and therapeutic and prophylaxis have involved phages.
