Abstract

ABSTRACT Extant studies have not provided clear and systematic information about the evolution of group home care for youth (12–17 years). The aim of this article is to systematically explore and document how group homes evolved in North America and the United Kingdom (UK) as a result of persistent abuse and neglect of children by institutions established to care for and protect them. The study focuses more on North America with examples from the UK, The study includes a section on residential schools and how colonialists subjected indigenous children to inhuman treatments and the consequences thereafter.
