Abstract
Microsurgical techniques have greatly expanded the scope and quality of reconstructive breast surgery. Currently, free DIEAP (deep inferior epigastric artery perforator), SGAP (superior gluteal artery perforator), and SIEA (superficial inferior epigastric artery) flaps are used on a routine basis in the authors' department. The internal mammary vessels are the first choice recipient vessels, and their use as recipient vessels for free-flap breast reconstruction has been well-established. The authors' aim was to study the histopathology of donor and recipient vessels used in free-flap breast reconstruction, and to correlate the results with possible preoperative risk factors such as radiation therapy and chemotherapy.
