Abstract
Quantitative history and history of elementary schools. After a brief sketch of what historians expect from quantitative and sériai research methods, the author stresses the contribution which the examination of some docu-mentary sources can bring to the knowledge of the results obtained by elementary schools in Lower Normandy in the first half of 19th century, and of the causes of the situation thus revealed.
