Introduction

Kumaran et al (2009) provided compelling evidence that the hippocampus acquires and retains knowledge about conceptual relations among visual patterns during a task where participants learn associations between a set of patterns and a set of choices through reinforcement learning. They showed that, during learning, hippocampal blood oxygenation level-dependent (BOLD) signal correlates with participants’ knowledge of conceptual relations among the patterns.
