Abstract

Hipparion is still present in the Lower Pleistocene (Villafranchian) of Europe, but its remains are rare. At least two species can be distinguished: 1. (1) Hipparion crusafonti Villalta from Spain (Villaroya) and southern France (Perrier), Footbones long and slender. 2. (2) Hipparion moriturum Kretzoi from Hungary (Kislang), Rumania (Beresti and Mǎluşteni) and England (Red Crag of Suffolk, East Anglia). The folding of the enamel, especially in the upper molars, is carried to an extreme. Footbones (Mǎluşteni) shorter than in the foregoing species. A third, much smaller species from Rumania is perhaps indicated by a single tooth from Mǎluşteni.
