Abstract

A new approach to spark gap design is discussed. The object of this paper is to summarize the application of pulsed volume preionization of the path ahead of a propagating streamer for control of the streamer transit time. This approach to switchinq differs from most triggered switches' in that an already propagating streamer is caused to close by command. This control is applied to construct a subnanosecond jitter, high voltage switch which operates down to 60% of its selfbreakdown voltage.
