Abstract

In this chapter, I describe recommendations for higher education to meet the needs of women who have left Mormon polygamous communities and are seeking to enter higher education. The primary factors affecting readiness for higher education for the participants in this study were formal education experience, perceptions of a need for education, non-academic experiences that contributed to readiness for higher education settings, and the development of an independent self-concept. These distinctions result in program recommendations that address the background experience and knowledge necessary for a higher education setting (academic, social, and cultural) and the sociohistorical implications of self-definition created by a polygamous upbringing.
