Abstract

The first-order structural phase transition in LaGaO 3 at T c = 145°C has been examined by transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and X-ray powder diffraction. Both the low temperature (orthorhombic, Pbnm) and high temperature (rhombohedral, R 3c ) structures have been refined using the Rietveld full-pattern method. TEM reveals numerous twins in both phases. Two types of twin are observed in the low temperature orthorhombic phase which are characterized by reflections across the {112} orth and {110} orth planes. In the rhombohedral phase above T c, (110) rhomb reflection twins are observed with their mirror planes nearly parallel to the (001) orth plane. The crystallographic relations between the two phases are examined in situ using TEM. Our observations are in general consistent with the white-beam synchrotron X-ray topography studies reported in a companion paper.
